It is only in recent years that I have personally heard the phrase’ “muddying the waters” and beginning to understand this phrase has taken me yet more years. I am noticing much muddying of the waters lately. Such blatently negative behaviour(seems to be a bit of a theme at the moment) is not, to my mind, doing those involved any favours.
An inability to let others enjoy the limelight, might be considered a rather worrying trait. Sometimes the backseat can be an honourable place to be.
He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind.
